Aider's biggest advantage is that it runs on anything. If you want to use DeepSeek for cost reasons, local Llama 3 for privacy, or o1 for complex reasoning tasks, Aider supports all of them. You can run different models for different parts of a task — Architect mode uses one model to plan and another to execute. Claude Code is Claude-only, period.
Aider auto-commits every change with a generated commit message. If your workflow is commit-driven — you want a complete, reviewable git history of everything the AI touched — Aider's automatic commit behavior is the right default. It also means you always have a clean rollback point without thinking about it.
Aider's repo map is designed for large codebases where loading everything into context isn't practical. The map gives the model a high-signal summary of the structure — what files exist, what they export, how they connect — without burning the entire context budget on files that aren't relevant to the task.

This is Claude Code's biggest structural advantage. An Aider session is a conversation about code. A Claude Code session can also query your production database, read GitHub issues, check Slack threads, and call internal APIs — through MCP servers you've wired in. If your task requires external context beyond the codebase, Claude Code can reach it; Aider cannot.
CLAUDE.md gives every session in a repo a consistent starting context: what the architecture is, what conventions to follow, what to avoid, what's in progress. Teammates who clone the repo get the same context automatically. Aider's config file handles settings and defaults, not project knowledge — there's no Aider equivalent of committed project memory that the model uses as persistent context.
Claude's 1M-token context window lets Claude Code hold an entire large codebase in context for a single session — all the files, all the tests, all the dependencies — without any summarization or mapping layer. For genuinely complex tasks where the context of the whole matters (refactors, architectural changes, debugging deeply interconnected systems), having the full picture without approximation makes a difference.
Aider recommends Claude Sonnet as its default model. Claude Code uses Claude directly — the same model, without the Aider abstraction layer between you and it. If you're already paying Anthropic API rates, Claude Code gives you a tighter integration with no intermediary. The model quality is identical, but the tooling is purpose-built for it.
Claude Code's non-interactive mode integrates cleanly into scripts and CI workflows. Its permissions model lets you scope exactly what it can touch in automated contexts. Both tools have headless modes, but Claude Code's is more developed for production pipeline use.
Ironically, Aider recommends Claude. Aider's default model recommendation is Claude 3.7 Sonnet. So in practice, most heavy Aider users are billing Anthropic API rates regardless. The question isn't which API you're paying — it's which tool wraps that API in the right way for your workflow.

If you're using Aider with Claude — which is what Aider itself recommends — you're paying the same API rates as Claude Code. The cost delta only matters if you use a cheaper model (DeepSeek, Gemini Flash) or a local model via Aider. Claude Code has no equivalent cheaper option.
Both Claude Code and Aider hit context walls on long sessions. For Claude Code, the session fills with tool outputs and conversation history until the model can no longer see the beginning.
